I read just shy of 50 books in 2023, which I know isn't a lot compared to some people, but it's a lot for me when I take into account how much reading I do for my day job. This year, I'd like to read at least 50 books, but ideally, I'll hit 75 or 100.

On the blogging front, I'd like to post 2-3 Book Cravings posts per week (my personal thoughts on books I've read), along with keeping up on this feature: Tell Me Something Tuesday. I'd also like to open up my blog for any fellow author who'd like to be featured, and share whatever thoughts I might have throughout the year.

What are your reading and/or blogging goals this year?

I'm not sure I could live without any of them. LOL. But the ones I tend to use the most are my social media apps--Facebook, (especially messenger) Twitter, Instagram. My banking apps and email. And I'm always playing either Monster Busters or Solitaire Grand Harvest.

What are your must have phone apps?

I LOVED Barbies. I had so many of them, and all the accessories, too. I'd spend hours sitting on my bedroom floor playing with them, making up stories about their lives, decorating their houses. I also really enjoyed paper dolls, coloring books, and LiteBrite. As I got older, I discovered the original Super Mario Bros on the very first Nintendo gaming system. (Yeah, I just dated myself. LOL)

What were your favorite toys growing up?

The practical part of my brain says I'd want some sort of survival guide so I wouldn't die. LOL. But the book-loving part of my brain says I'd probably want Twilight. Preferably the entire saga, but if I can only have one book, then I'd take Midnight Sun or Breaking Dawn because they're the longest.

What book would you want with you a desert island?

I'm excited to finish the Torpedo Ink Series by Christine Feehan. This is a rather long series, so it's probably going to take me a while to finish. But if I do get through them quickly, I plan to just randomly work through my TBR by picking a book from my shelf and diving in. I find I read more when I do this as opposed to setting a reading schedule for myself.

What books are you excited to read this winter?

I have a lot to be thankful for this year. First and foremost -- my family and friends. I wouldn't be able to function the way I do without them. They keep me grounded while also boosting me to reach for my dreams.

I'm thankful for the amazing doctors at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and the entire GI team for how well they always take care of my daughter and how they genuinely care about her.

I'm thankful for my writing and publishing friends. This is a brutal industry, and if not for every single one of you, I'd have quit by now. LOL.

What're you thankful for?

I've never been a big sports person. I never played any in high school or college, though I was in my high school colorguard and would march in parades, twirling my flag. lol. As an adult, I'm still not a sports person. I do play golf with my husband on occasion, and I like to take walks with my dog, but that's about it. Oh, and I try to workout on a regular basis.

What about you? Do you play sports?
What're your favorite recreational activities?

I'm honestly not a big fan of fantasy or sci-fi. I have read some urban fantasy, but not too much, and it often crosses the line into more paranormal in terms of angels and demons. The best urban fantasy book I have ever read was Pledge of Ashes by Amy Sevan. Seriously, if you're a fan of UF, check this book out. You won't be sorry!

I think the reason I'm not a fan of sci-fi and epic fantasy is because there's a lot of necessary world building, and reading that tends to bore me. I find myself skipping large chunks of text, and then that ends up confusing me.

What about you? Are you a fantasy, sci-fi fan?
What do you love about it?

Everything! Honestly, I really don't think I can pick any one thing I like about Halloween, because for me, it's an entire season and not just one day. But I love the kids in their costumes, the haunted houses, the candy. Man, do I have a terrible sweet tooth! Above all else, though, there's this mood or vibe on Halloween that's just unmatched. I'm not sure I can really explain it.

What's your favorite thing about Halloween?

I'm pretty sure all the books I've read this year are new-to-me authors! I've been trying hard to expand my reading list and engage with new genres and authors.

Some of my notable new-to-me authors this year are:

  • Lily Meade -- I absolutely loved her debut novel, The Shadow Sister.
  • Josh Berk & Saundra Mitchell -- Their Camp Murderface duology was tons of fun.
  • R.F. Kuang -- I devoured her book, Yellowface, and will more than likely reread it at some point.
  • Julie Murphy -- I found her newest book, Camp Sylvania at a thrift store and loved her writing style.

What new to you authors have you discovered this year?
Who should I check out?

I'll admit -- I haven't been to my local library in well over a year. Mostly because I already have so many books at home that I need to read, but also because my local branch has been undergoing a massive remodel and has been closed for a while.

When I do go, though, I prefer to visit in-person. I can walk there, which is great exercise for me, and I love to just browse the shelves, pick up the books, read the back covers. It's a great way to try out new-to-me authors and genres I might not otherwise try. And yes, I'm that person who will then go buy the books for my shelves if I really enjoy them, so that's a double win for the author.

Which do you prefer when using a library -- in-person or online? Why?

Kara's Book Cravings: Camp Sylvania

I love to browse thrift stores and antique shops, and I always take time to peruse the books they have available. I've found a lot of great gems doing this -- though I always feel a twinge of guilt that the author isn't getting paid for a secondhand sale like that, but I also know if I like the book, I'll go on to buy more of their books or the rest of the series.

Anyway, I found this book at a local thrift store:

CAMP SYLVANIA by Julie Murphy is another middle grade book set during summer camp, so naturally, I was immediately intrigued. This one had some twists though. First, it's set at fat camp, which was a new one for me. Second, it has vampires! And y'all know how much I love vampires!

At first, I was so angry with the parents in this book, because they just drop the bomb on the main character (Maggie) that she's going to fat camp instead of the acting camp she had her heart set on. The fatphobia disguised as loving / concerned parents really got under my skin. Thankfully, by the end of the book, Maggie found her voice and stood up to her parents -- who were already having a change of heart. But the shift to "love the body you're in" was really nice.

The vampires were an added bonus to this story, and I really enjoyed how they were handled. We don't get too much of the lore, but we get enough to understand what's happening.

I really, really enjoyed this one, and read it in a day. Even though this is aimed at younger readers, there's so much in here that appeals to readers of all ages. I highly recommend everyone read this book!

Has anyone else read this book?

What about any other books by this author?

For me, this varies. Typically, I like just a weekend getaway because it's shorter and not so difficult for me in terms of managing my Fibro. And it's easier to find someone to take care of all my furry kids when I'm gone for just a weekend. But at least once a year -- usually in the summer -- I take a week away with my girls for our annual mother-daughter vacation. Those trips are always so much fun, but woo-boy do they drain me. lol.

What about you?
What type of trip do you prefer to take?

Tuesday Tips: Living and Working with a Chronic Illness

As you may know, a few years ago, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. This completely altered my life in so many ways, and I've had to learn to adapt. People often ask me how I manage, and I figured why not share my top tips for living and working with a chronic illness. But before I get into this, I need to be clear that every person is different, and what works for me may not work for you--and that's okay! Find what does work for you and do that.

Okay, so here we go...

LEARN TO SAY NO!

I'm a people pleaser. I like to help others, and saying no is hard for me. And I'm notorious for offering help even when not asked -- I'm always putting myself out there. As you can imagine, this has taken a toll on me over the years. I had to learn to prioritize and say no, which I'm not going to lie... it was difficult. But for my own physical and mental health, I simply have to say no sometimes, and you know what? That's okay!

LEARN TO FORGIVE YOURSELF!

This was a big one for me, too. Anytime I'm not actively working, I feel guilty. Like, I should be writing or editing or blogging or literally anything other than sitting on the couch watching TV, or napping. But I had to take a step back and realize that doing nothing is actually doing something. I'm taking care of myself, and let's face it--if I'm not in good health, I can't do any of that other stuff. So, forgive yourself for not working every second of every day, and give yourself permission to rest when needed.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF!

I know this seems like a no-brainer, but I have to remind myself of this daily. Make sure you're getting enough exercise and drinking enough water. Get plenty of sleep (when possible). Get some fresh air. Eat healthy -- in whatever context that means for you. Personally, I've found that I need to avoid too many carbs, so I tend to stick to a Keto friendly diet. And most importantly -- find something you like to do that's not related to your job. As a writer and editor, I'm always engrossed in books in some form, but lately, I've been stepping away to focus on other things: painting wooden crafts, adult coloring books, playing Solitaire on my phone. These things help me decompress, and then I tend to feel a little better.

FIND A SUPPORT SYSTEM!

Whether this is family or friends or an online support group, having people you can lean on and talk to is invaluable. God knows I wouldn't be as functional as I am without my husband, kids, parents, and close friends. And really, just having someone who understands what you live with every day and who you can talk to about all of it is sometimes exactly what you need.

Do you have any other tips and tricks to living with a chronic illness? Share your thoughts in the comments!

3 Tips to Dig Yourself Out of a Reading Rut

We've all heard of writer's block, and so many authors have written blogs and articles and essays and social media posts about how to overcome writer's block. But what happens when you're in a reading rut? When you can't seem to get into a book? And I don't mean a lack of reading materials, but the inability to get engrossed in a story or stick with a book longer than a few pages.

I've been struggling with this recently. While I don't have a lack of books to read -- my TBR pile is out of control and grows steadily -- I haven't been able to really stick with anything. I start books and then quickly lose interest after a chapter or two. Normally, I read a couple of books a month, but for the past 4 or 5 months, I haven't read a single thing. Even my go-to favorite genres haven't been doing it for me.

Being a writer myself, I draw a lot of inspiration and motivation from reading, so not being able to lose myself in books is almost as bad as not being able to write. I needed to find a way out of this rut. Here are 3 tips that helped me...

TIP #1: Don't stress about not reading. When you're trying to do something and you can't, you often obsess about it and stress about it and then that compounds the issue. At least, that's what happens with me. So, give yourself permission to not read. Occupy your mind and time doing something else you enjoy, and eventually, you'll get back to reading.

TIP #2: Change how you read. If you normally read digital books or only read paperbacks, switch it up. Sometimes the feel of something different in your hands can make a huge difference.

TIP #3: Change what you read. If you're normally a fan of YA or romance or fantasy, try reading something outside of your genre. This is probably the biggest thing that helped me. I love to read YA books of any genre, but even those hadn't been holding my attention.

But then my husband bought these two books for my mom. She loves to read about the history of places, and still being fairly new to Michigan, she's eager to learn about her new home state. I mentioned to my mom that I wanted to read them when she was finished, and she told me to go ahead and read them first, if I wanted. So I did.

Now, I almost never read non-fiction of any sort, but these books highlight unique places and stories throughout Michigan. They were short and set up so that each part / location was just a few pages. No long chapters. No complicated plot. No characters to keep track of.

It was easy reading, and that's exactly what I needed. I read both of these books in a single day -- and now I'm waiting for the other 4 volumes to arrive so I can read those, too. Learning about places I've visited and finding new places to go has been so much fun. I'm excited to visit some of these places when my daughter visits next month.

And then I found this gem at a yard sale for $0.50! Again, not a huge non-fiction reader, but this intrigued me because I'm a huge fan of anything spooky and scary. Written by a local author, I figured why not give it a shot -- and I'm so glad I did. This is essentially a collection of short stories about local Michigan areas and the ghost / haunted stories surrounding them.

I don't think I'm quite ready to dive back into my trusted genres just yet, but I am going to keep reading non-fiction, and I think I might branch out into a few other genres I don't normally read. Like, I'm not a trend chaser. I rarely read books that are super-hyped, and if I ever do, it's usually years after the trend has died down. I never read Twilight until Breaking Dawn part 1 was in theaters. I've still never read the Harry Potter Series. Or Game of Thrones. Or Outlander. I've just never gotten into the hype around certain books.

And that's exactly why I'm going to jump in feet first and read some of them. I'm going out of my comfort zone, and I'm going to reclaim my love of reading! Naturally, I'm going to blog about this little experiment, too, with a new feature I'm calling, "Is it Worth the Hype?" I'll read popular books and give my opinion on whether I think they warrant the hype they get. I'll also continue to read books that have little to no hype and see if they should be getting more love than they are.

Stay tuned... and keep reading :)

Looking Back on 2021...

It's been another "Year" hasn't it? As a country, we're still fighting a pandemic, dealing with so much hate and division in the world, and publishing... well, publishing is still publishing: slow, heartbreaking, and impossibly difficult. On top of all this, I had a lot of personal struggles this year, mostly with my health, but also with saying goodbye to my daughter who moved out of state, mourning the loss of my beloved cat, Snowball, and recently, learning one of my close friends will be moving, too. Despite all of this, I keep pushing forward in an effort to meet my goals for the year. So, let's take a look back on the year to see what I accomplished, what I didn't, and what big changes I faced in 2021.

My original 2021 goals included:

(1) SMALL TOWN COWBOY ROMANCE BOOK / SERIES

I did manage to get the first few chapters written, along with a full synopsis, but I didn't get the whole story written as I would have liked. My agent did send out my partial and proposal, but I'm sad to say the book / series didn't sell. I opted to set it aside (for now) in favor of other projects.

(2) CURSED SERIES SPIN-OFF BOOK

I did write and publish one spin-off book, EVERLASTING HOPE, that picks up right after the end of book 7, Eternal Life. I also began writing another spin-off series called WARS OF THE HEART that will finally give Jax his much deserved happily-ever-after.

(3) ADULT ROMANTIC SUSPENSE BOOK

Hahaha. NOPE! Other than a short story for an anthology, and the aforementioned cowboy book, I didn't really write much adult anything this year. For now, my heart is in YA, so that's probably where I'll stay for the time being.

(4) MORE YA BOOKS

As I've already mentioned, I did write a Cursed Series spin-off book and started a new, related series. Additionally, I co-wrote a YA sci-fi romance called EDGE OF NOWHERE with Rosie Somers. We're currently in the editing stage for that book while plotting out book 2. I wrote THE CULLING as well, which releases January 4, 2022 as part of The Magic of Midnight Anthology.

(5) READ TILL MY EYES BLEED

Sadly, I didn't read nearly as much as I would have liked, but what I have read this year was really great!

(6) GET OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE

I'm proud to say I did do this! I had my first ever YouTube interview with the lovely Shraddha Nanda, which you can watch HERE if you'd like. I also attended a local craft / vendor fair where I sold my books.

While I did fairly well with my goals this past year, so much more has happened that I never expected or planned for, so here's the quick rundown:

Professionally:

  • I wrote a total of 361,123 words. That's 319,104 words LESS than last year, but considering all the sick days I had this year, I'll take this a win.
  • I blogged a total of 8,951 words.
  • I released 3 books: Eternal Life, Everlasting Hope, and One Night Vamp (as part of the Lovers Beyond Midnight Anthology)
  • I wrote book 1 of Jax's series, and I'm currently halfway through book 2.
  • I wrote Cursed, which is Eternal Curse as told from Trent's point-of-view. I released it one chapter at a time, weekly, via my newsletter.
  • I sold licensing rights to my series to Readict and eGlobal Creative, so my books continue to reach new readers.
  • I released Eternal Curse and Eternal Choice in audiobook format. Shoutout to my amazing narrator, Andy Garcia-Ruse!
  • I hired an amazing PA -- Hi, Kris!! Having an assistant like this was something that had always been on my bucket list of things I'd love to do/have as an author.
  • I've booked TWO signing events for next year. Check out my full schedule of appearances HERE.
  • For Anaiah, I edited 12 full length novels and 1 novella.
  • I freelance edited 8 manuscripts.
  • I removed ALL of my books from Kindle Unlimited and have distributed them wide.

Personally:

  • I GOT A PUPPY! His name is Crowley, and he's absolutely adorable. I love him so much.
  • I made a new friend--my neighbor--who is, sadly, moving to Arizona next month, but having her around to hang out with has been fun. She's also the one who let me have Crowley, so for that, I'll be forever grateful.
  • I survived a still-ongoing global pandemic without getting sick. Well, not any sicker than usual, anyway. Though, I did struggle quite a bit this year with my fibro and fatigue. In fact, I've had a total of 37 sick days where I couldn't manage to get out of bed, let alone work.
  • I gained back close to 10 pounds, which I know isn't a lot, but I've learned to not let this get me down, and I've reaffirmed my commitment to get back in shape.
  • Both my son and daughter graduated from high school. I'm so incredibly proud of both of them.
  • My daughter from NY was able to come to MI for the graduation ceremony and party. Spending time with her is always wonderful.
  • I made a trip to NY to visit family.
  • My eldest daughter moved out of my house and in with her boyfriend in Missouri.
  • I made a trip to Missouri to visit my eldest daughter and surprise her with the delivery of her chosen puppy, Raven.
  • I remodeled my office!
  • I booked a Jamaican cruise for July 2022 that I'll be taking with my BFF, Emily, and all 4 of my girls. I'm crazy excited for this and am praying hard that it all works out. (Stupid Covid!)
  • I got vaccinated for Covid, and surprisingly, I only had mild side effects.
  • My daughter got her dream job working at a puppy daycare.

I even managed to read some this year:

  • His Kind of Cowgirl by Karen Rock
  • In Bed with the Rancher by Sara Orwig
  • The Rancher by Joanne Rock
  • Big Bad Cowboy by Carly Bloom
  • The Cowboy's Forbidden Crush by Deborah Garland
  • Covet by Tracy Wolff
  • Hush, Hush, Crescendo, Silence, and Finale by Becca Fitzpatrick
  • Freak Frat by Nicki Greenwood
  • Crimson Born, Crimson Storm, Crimson Bond, and Crimson Crown by Amy Patrick
  • Awakening by Leigh Walker
  • Captured by Erica Stevens
  • Wide for the Win by Mark Leslie Lefebvre

Overall, it's been a decent year for me, and I'm excited to see what I can accomplish in 2022. Stay tuned for my official goals post :-) In the meantime, tell me in the comments what YOU did this year!

The Journey to Self-Publication, Part 14: Defining Success

I've gotten quite a few questions about why I finally decided to delve into self-publishing and how I'm doing it, so I figured why not create a new blog series!

Every Monday, I'll be sharing a piece of the self-publishing puzzle---from how I came to this choice to writing, editing, marketing, sales, and everything in between. Please remember that this is simply my experience, how chose to do things. Others do things differently, and that's fine! So, your mileage may vary, but in the end, I hope seeing yet another way of tackling self-publishing will help you on your path.

Need to catch up on previous posts? Find them here:

It's been a while since I've made a post in this blog series, and I apologize for that. Life has gotten the best of me, but it's now a new year and I'm back at it! Hope everyone had a happy holiday season and that 2021 is treating you well so far :)

I'm a week away from releasing book 5 in my series, and it seems so surreal to me. It feels like I just began this journey, and now I'm nearing the end -- not the end of self-publishing because I do have plans to continue and release new books. But as I reflect on how far I've come, I realized that I've been a lot more successful than I imagined in terms of what I deem to be success.

The definition of success is going to be different for everyone. For some, it's about number of copies sold, how much in royalties are earned, how many reviews a book gets, if it gets a big trade publication review, etc. Now, I'm not here to tell you what should constitute success and what shouldn't, but I will tell you how I define it and how I set and met reasonable goals along the way.

When I first started this journey, I knew it was going to be a ton of work, and I knew I wasn't going to sell hundreds of copies. Self-publishing any book is difficult, but self-publishing YA is an even harder uphill battle. That combined with the fact that I'm essentially a nobody in the publishing world, I realized each sale was going to be hard-earned. With that in mind, while I did set some sales specific goals, I focused my success goals on other things.

GOAL #1: Get 5 or more preorders for book one. I managed to get 10 preorders, so this goal was successful and gave me the boost I needed to push harder with each new release. Sadly, I didn't beat this number in preorders for book 2, but I did with book 3 with 13 preorders!

GOAL #2: Get a minimum of 15 reviews on Amazon. I know there's info floating around that the magic number for Amazon is 50 reviews, but again, I'm being realistic here. I have a combined 47 reviews on Amazon across all four books in the series that have been released so far. And a total of 69 on Goodreads. Not too shabby, and I'm totally counting this as a success!

GOAL #3: Okay, so this was my biggest goal and for me, the ultimate determining factor in deciding if I was truly successful or not. And it's probably not what you think... I wanted someone to read my book and love it so much they felt compelled to email me and tell me.

And it happened!!! More than once, actually. I've had a handful of readers reach out to me via the contact form on my website and tell me how much they loved my book, ask when the next one will be out, and ask if they could join my ARC team (which, prior to these emails, I didn't really have an ARC team. lol. But you can bet your butt I do now!) I've also had readers who found my book on BookSirens reach out to me to ask to join my ARC team, too.

But the one thing that's really made me sit back and say, "Wow, I did it! There are people out there who absolutely love my books. I achieved my ultimate goal." was when Kris Riley of My Blissful Books agreed to read and review Eternal Curse.

Let me back up for a second here... I was scrolling through Twitter one day as I often do and I found a review of a friend's book, one I had done developmental edits on. So, naturally, I clicked through to read the review (it was a glowing 5* review), and then I began to poke around on the website until I found the page for review requests. Figuring it couldn't hurt to try, I emailed the blogger. She responded and agreed to review but said it wouldn't be until later in the year--November-ish. I said that was fine, sent her a digital copy, and then forgot about it.

Fast forward to November, and I see the following image / post on social media:

Naturally, I got a little nervous. What if she hated it and tore it to shreds?? And then this happened...

Followed by all of this:

To say she loved this series is an understatement. I'm not exaggerating in the slightest when I say she blew through all 6 books in a week flat. She has quickly become one of my biggest fans and even named The Cursed Series her favorite paranormal series of 2020!! But she didn't stop there. She read my entire backlist, too, including my two books I'd published as Lexi Lawton.

I officially have a super-fan!

If I never sell another copy, I will be happy knowing there are others out there who loved these books and these characters as much as I do. (Though, I really really hope I continue to sell copies.) If you don't already follow My Blissful Books, you really should! And check out her group on Facebook as well.

Now that I've rambled, allow me to get to the actual point of this post:

Define what success means to you, and then set reasonable, attainable goals to hit that mark of success, whatever that may be. And once you reach it, celebrate!! Then, if you want to keep going, move the goal post and aim for the next mark.

Come back next week when I'll be talking about pricing and how I'm using price points to help market the final book in the series.

Looking Back on 2018

I'm not gonna lie... 2018 kicked my ass! I'm pretty sure everyone feels this way in terms of the state of politics in the world, but beyond that, on a much more personal and professional level, this has been a very not good year for me. I'm really optimistic about 2019, though. But, I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's take a look back on the year and see what I accomplished, what I didn't, and what big changes I faced in 2018.

So, my original 2018 goals included:

(1) Finish Eternal Curse, the first book in my YA paranormal romance series.

Status: GOAL MET!!

My Thoughts: Not only did I finish this book, it made the rounds with several beta readers, and I revised the heck out of it. I'm SO pleased with how this book turned out, and I cannot wait to share it with the world.

(2) Write the sequel to Eternal Curse.

Status: GOAL KINDA MET

My Thoughts: I wrote almost 25k of the sequel, currently titled Eternal Bond, and then I stopped because I wasn't sure what was going to happen with book one. I didn't want to get too far into the sequel only to find out I needed to change a lot of stuff. I do have a clear idea of where the story is going now, though, and so now it's just a matter of writing it.

(3) Write Meet Me at the Mistletoe, a sweet Christmas romance novella for the Christian market.

Status: GOAL NOT MET

My Thoughts: This project is temporarily shelved while I focus on building my YA brand.

(4) Finish Deception, the first book in a new Christian romantic suspense series.

Status: GOAL NOT MET

My Thoughts: This project has also been temporarily shelved while I focus on building my YA brand.

(5) Take an inventory of all my half-started YA projects and see if any of them are worth salvaging.

Status: GOAL MET!!!

My Thoughts: Out of 9 started projects, there are 6 of them I think are worthy of pursuing, some of which will possibly be co-written with other authors.

(6) Query something.

Status: GOAL MET!!

My Thoughts: I sent my first query for Eternal Curse in February, and I've been working at it all year. I've racked up a lot of rejections, but I'm happy to report I have one full and one partial still out with agents. *Fingers crossed*

(7) Keep on Bloggin'

Status: GOAL KINDA MET

My Thoughts: There were some weeks when I was really on top of this, but not as much as I would have liked.

(8) Read

Status: GOAL MET!!

My Thoughts: I'm please with how much I've read this year, which is much more than in past years. Here's what I knocked off my TBR in 2018:

  • Camp So-and-So by Mary McCoy
  • Evernight by Claudia Gray
  • One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus
  • The Leaving by Tara Altebrando
  • There's Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins
  • We All Fall Down by Natalie D. Richards
  • One Was Lost by Natalie D. Richards
  • The Cellar by Natasha Preston
  • You Will Be Mine by Natasha Preston
  • The Cabin by Natasha Preston
  • Gone Too Far by Natalie D. Richards
  • Survive the Night by Danielle Vega
  • Six Months Later by Natalie D. Richards
  • Campfire by Shawn Sarles
  • The Escape by Hannah Jayne
  • All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda
  • Something About Forever by Kimberly Loth
  • Bloodlust & Initiation (Vampire Beach 1 and 2)by Alex Duval
  • Ritual & Legacy (Vampire Beach 2 and 3) by Alex Duval
  • Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles
  • Rules of Attraction by Simone Elkeles
  • Chain Reaction by Simone Elkeles
  • I'll Be Yours by Jenny B. Jones

Out of 8 goals, I fully achieved four, kinda achieved two, and completely flaked on two. Those numbers could be worse--and they have been in past years. lol. In addition to all of that, there were a lot of other things I accomplished, both professionally and personally...

PROFESSIONALLY:
  • I wrote a total of 135,844 words on various projects.
  • Between here and the Anaiah Press blog, I blogged a total of 11,941 words.
  • For Anaiah, I edited 7 full-length novels and 3 novellas.
  • I freelance edited 3 full-length manuscripts.
  • I beta read 3 full-length manuscripts.
  • I created and legally formed FireChicken Press, LLC, which is my personal self-publishing company.
  • I returned to working on my YA contemporary romance series, The Georgia Corbins, and have finally made a publishing decision on that. (More to come on that in my 2019 Goals post)
  • I've outlined a couple new YA projects/ideas.

PERSONALLY:
  • In January, I saw Black Veil Brides in concert with my oldest daughter for her birthday. I'm now a diehard fan of them, and they almost single-handedly fuel the playlist for my paranormal series!
  • In October, I saw Twenty-one Pilots in concert again with my daughter and her friend.
  • Also in October, I saw Luke Bryan for the very first time! *internal squealing*
  • In November, I saw The Thunder From Down Under.
  • I made a couple visits to NY to see my parents.
  • My parents came to MI in November to celebrate Thanksgiving and early Christmas with us.
  • I got a little red sports car!

Despite the fact I didn't publish a single thing in 2018, and I didn't snag an agent, I accomplished much more than I realized. I'm calling this a pretty good year overall.
