TEASER TUESDAY: Suzanna J. Linton

Welcome to another installment of TEASER TUESDAY. I'm excited to have the lovely Suzanna J. Linton here with us today. She'll be sharing an excerpt from her novel, WILLOWS OF FATE.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

A strange flickering appears at one of the benches, like sunlight flashing through swinging tree branches. It breaks apart and a man sits there. He’s wearing black trousers and a dark blue tunic with a black long-sleeved shirt underneath it. On the tunic is a lion embroidered in bright gold. He wears a heavy gold chain on his wrist and has curly, dirty blond hair. The man gestures for me to join him.

I grip the door handle, focusing on the smooth metal. Closing my eyes, I whisper, “He’s not real. He’s not real.” Opening my eyes, I see that he’s still there. He gestures again.

Something deep in my gut pulls me toward him. There are two choices here and I hesitate, fear and this gut-deep pull ripping my mind in two.

I open the door and step out, the humidity and heat of the day closing around me like a clammy fist.

“Who are you?” I ask, too afraid to come any closer. The door swings closed behind me.

“I’m a friend of Martin,” he replies. Like the man in gold, his accent is strange, with an odd lilt to the words.

“I don’t know who that is.”

“That’s the man in the armor who’s been visiting you.”

I shift from one foot to another. “What do you want?”

“To talk. Will you sit with me?”

“I’m fine where I am.”

“You don’t trust me.” He doesn’t sound very surprised or disappointed.

“My brother is dead and my house was broken into. A man in a hood shot an arrow at me. I’m having a problem trusting anyone I don’t know right now.”

He stands. Not as tall as the armored man, Martin, he’s actually my height. He strolls toward me but stops a couple of feet away. “I’m not going to hurt you, Desdemona.”

“How do you know my name? How did you get here? What was that light? What do you want?”

“I know your name because your family is very special. That light was my way of arriving in your world. It’s how Martin arrives.” He holds his hands out. “All I want is what’s best for you. I want you to be safe. There are powerful people after you. You have something they want. If you come with me, I’ll keep you safe.”

Am I imagining this? Is this really happening? Or have I finally lost my mind? If so, then what better place than a mental institution?

“They want something?” I ask. “What? I don’t have anything.”

“You are wrong about that.”

I shake my head. “I have to go. I need to think about this.”

“Think about what? About how your brother was murdered by the men who are after you?”

“But why me? I’m no-one special.”

“You have something special. And there are those who will stop at nothing to get it.”

“Who are you?”

{BOOK TOUR} Winter In the Soul

I'm happy to welcome Jennifer Novotney to the blog today! She's here to talk about the inspiration for her debut YA novel, WINTER IN THE SOUL! Take it away, Jennifer :-)

When I started writing Winter in the Soul, I was initially inspired by the book The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I loved the allegorical tale of adventure and motivation. I wanted to be able to inspire readers this way.  So, I started to write. I didn't have a clear plan of where my main character, Lilika, would end up, but I knew she would live in a fantastical world void of technology. I knew that she would discover the world around her. I knew she would rise to the challenges she faced. I knew she would be a hero.

It was during this time that I thought about pursuing my doctorate in English. I wanted to focus on creative writing and wrote the first thirty pages of Winter in the Soul as a writing sample for a novel I wanted to continue writing as part of my dissertation. Although this was my initial intent, I didn't stop at those thirty pages. I kept writing. Something was pulling me in to this story and I just couldn't shake the characters or the world out of my mind. I had to write. I couldn't stop.

By the time I got my first acceptance into a PhD program, I had already written most of the novel. I even received a top scholarship, but in the end, decided  to put the degree on hold.  I also put Winter in the Soul on hold, but only temporarily. I changed jobs and was busy adjusting to my new position, but something was still calling me to my manuscript. I wanted to see it in print. I wanted to continue to pursue my goal of getting it published.

In the process of writing the first draft of Winter in the Soul, I set it aside several times. Each time I picked it back up to write, I fell into the magical and inviting world and experienced something new about it.

              Funny enough, this novel was not my first attempt at writing a full length story. I  had written about two others that will never see the light of day. I think it is certainly a specific skill to write a longer piece, one that takes practice and perseverance. With the others, the story sort of ran out at a certain point and as much as I tried to stretch it and make it work as a longer piece, it just didn't. With Winter in the Soul, however, it was just the opposite.  When I realized the magnitude of this story as opposed to the others, I knew I had something special.

I've always known that I'm a big thinker. Someone once described me as a visionary. I see the big picture of things. I was inspired, in a sense, by everything I've experienced. I thought of a world in which I'd want to live. My main character is one I'd want to be. To me, those are the best stories. To be able to escape in a book and live through the eyes of the main character is what got me interested in reading in the first place. In one way or another, every book I've read has inspired me to write Winter in the Soul because they have formed my love of reading and writing.

ELECTED by Rori Shay

Today is my stop on the blog tour for ELECTED by Rori Shay! She's agreed to share with us how she built the world for ELECTED and the process she used. So, without further ado.... Take it away, Rori :)

I woke up one morning with the general idea for ELECTED in my head.  I think the world just naturally came after that.  Since technology isn't allowed, it's basically a place without any machines.  And it's dilapidated and devastated because of the eco-crisis and following world war.  But there are still a few cool, futuristic inventions leftover from before the world leaders banned technology.  The hard part, for me, was actually building the world for the 2nd ELECTED book!  I can't wait until people get to that book in the series.  

The one thing authors always say about world building is to be true to the rules.  Make up rules and limits for your world, and stick with them.  For example, if it's a magic world that you're creating where wizards use spells and wands to enact actions, then there has to always be a chant or a wand involved.  In Harry Potter, for example, Harry could not have made some magical thing happen just by saying, "come on wand, flick that bad guy's wand out of his hand." No, he had to stick within the rules of the world JK Rowlings created and use a specific chant to expel the wand from an adversary's grip.  I think this world building advice is very true for sci-fi and fantasy books of all kinds.

EVERY GIRL LOVES A BAD BOY:

I read a lot of NA and YA fiction and one thing I’ve noticed in the recent string of books that I’ve read is the love in interests. I think it’s more true of current NA than YA, but there are a heck of a lot of bad boys. And we all—well most of us—love them. Throw a heroine into a story with a bad boy and nine times out of ten she’ll fall for him. Even in the classics.

And I’m no exception. I love a good bad boy and in any story that has more than one male character, I fall for the bad boy every single time. And hard. In real life too – my hubby is a sharp tongued, quick witted biker. Or he was when we met at 19, a million years ago. ;) There’s just something about those that’s so damn irresistible.

What is it that makes a bad boy?

A troubled past.

A tendency to block others out emotionally.

Usually, but not always possession of a quick wit.

A tendency to lean toward undesirable qualities – crime, fighting etc

Readers swoon over bad boys, right…it’s not just me. I’m not the weird one chasing the boy parents really don’t want their daughter to date? Phew. I’m glad you’re all in the boat with me.

The Collective. That’s what Al said, too. I glance at Will sideways. His mouth hangs slightly open, his eyes wide. He looks as astonished as I feel. Beau’s gaze shifts beyond me, and his face lights up in a smile. When I look over my shoulder, I see Bertie standing in the doorway, waving. She smiles and continues past the room; obviously she and Al are well known around here.

“When tech is used, an alarm is activated, alerting The Collective,” Beau continues. “If the use is unauthorized, they send a scout to appropriate the tech and contain any knowledge of its existence.”

The man in the East Coast Gas uniform, he must have been a scout.

“What do you mean?” Will asks.

Beau rubs his forehead. “Technology, tools, machines, items which perform a specific function. Some tech is common, like cellphones, computers, and satellite tracking, but other tech is not known or used at all. The Collective works hard to keep its knowledge hidden from the general population.”

I shake my head. “I should have known it wasn’t magic.”

The blue flower on the pendant made me appear invisible. Not magic, but technology. My hand still clutches it protectively. How does it work? It has to be some trick with light. I’ve always hated science; I spend most of class daydreaming of being outside with Will and my camera, soaking up his contagious happiness.

Beau’s voice breaks my thoughts. “We also have an alarm. We use it to intercept Collective agents and stop them from harming innocent people. The radar pinpoints the location of the use of tech.”

The boy, the one in the leather jacket. My gaze darts back to the window and the tree branches reaching over the lawn, but I can’t see him. He must have been sent to intercept the gas man.

“This is a safe house. The Collective can’t reach it. You’ll have to stay here while we secure your safety,” Beau says.

“A safe house?” Will asks.

My mind spins again. It’s doing a lot of that this afternoon. There’s so much to take in. This morning we played a dumb game, and now we’re here in the middle of ‘great danger’.

“There are several of them across the country, and each house has a number of people. We will give you assistance.”

My mind whirls. Scouts, collective, safe houses. It’s too much to take in. I move toward an armchair identical to Beau’s, place my hands on its soft, well-worn arms, and sink into it.

“I can’t stay here. My dad, I need to go home to him,” I say. “After Mom, he won’t cope if I disappear, too. He -- he needs me. He doesn’t even have his mother anymore.” I hang my head in my hands, twining my fingers into my hair. He’s balanced so close to the edge of despair, and I won’t push him over.

“They’re relentless. They won’t give up until they find you,” Al says. He’s still here. I’d almost forgotten him. “It’s not safe. You can’t outrun them forever. Don’t worry, I’ll keep an eye on your old man.”

Will’s already rigid stance stiffens further. “What do you mean ‘not safe’?”

“Mae is a threat to the secret knowledge of advanced technology,” Al says, “and The Collective eliminates their threats.”

Welcome, Vince! Care to start by telling us a bit about yourself?

Born and raised in Brooklyn NY, I now reside in Upstate NY with my wife. (Although I can still speak fluent Brooklynese.) My twin daughters remain not only my biggest fans, but usually are the first to read all of my work. Their home is run and operated for the comfort and convenience of their dogs.

I've has been writing fiction, poetry and song lyrics for as long as I can remember, most of which involve magical misfits, paranormal prodigies and even on occasion superheroes and their sidekicks.

What prompted you to start writing? And what was your inspiration for this specific book?

I’ve always loved to read. And growing up, I always l loved to come up with stories. When I was little and I played with my Spiderman action figure, it wasn’t enough just to have him swing through the house, I had to have a story. A villain to defeat, a girl to rescue. (My sister’s Barbie sometimes would be the woman. Shhh, don’t tell her.)
As far as Vision of Shadows, I just heard her voice in my head and it went from there. I knew I wanted to do something that could be funny, emotional and dangerous. I figured a teen who talks to ghosts was the place to start.

2. Can you tell us a bit about your writing process? Are you a plotter or pantser?
Definitely a plotter. (But quite often, I do wear pants.)

For years, I had tried to sit down with just a basic concept in my head. That was how the big boys do it, right? But I found I would only get so far and then I didn’t know where to go. Short stories were one thing, but keeping that narrative going for a novel length work just wasn’t working. That’s when I realized I could plot out the story and give myself a guide. I never filled in all the details, but I had a game plan and that was very important.

Sometimes, when I’m writing the first draft, I just plow through a scene even knowing it’s not working. Just get everything you need in there and then fix it later. In VoS, there was a very important scene where Bristol talks to her curmudgeon of a grandfather and he gives her a history lesson on their town and the feud between the Blackburn’s and the McKnight’s. I knew it was coming off too dry, but I wasn’t sure how to fix it. In the past I would have put it to the side and waited until I figured it out. But now I knew just get it in there and come back. That’s why God gave us revisions. In the end, I added a new element to the scene (She is a girl who see’s ghosts, after all) and I was pleased with how it turned out.

That’s what works for me, but every writer has their own way. And everyone has to find what works for them.

3. What's your writing space like? Do you have an office or do you prefer to write whenever and wherever you can?

It’s wherever I am with my laptop. I usually write at home in my recliner, but I’ll use the kitchen table. I’ll sometimes work from the break room at work where there’s a computer available. I’ll take my laptop with me when I get the oil changed on my car or sit in the parking lot while my daughter has her ice skating lesson.

4. This is your first book, correct? And it's being published by Entranced Publishing. I hear that you're the only man in a publisher full of women. So, tell us, is the estrogen choking you yet? Or do you find it easy to be surrounded by all those lovely women?

I’ve often found myself in the company of more women than men. At one point at home, I lived with my wife, my 2 daughters, my wife’s elderly grandmother and 2 female dogs. I had estrogen dripping down the walls.

I love being a part of Entranced. Sure, it would be cool to get another male author on board. So that while all of you ladies are sending around pictures of Ryan Gosling and/or Alexander Skarsgard (Yes, I’m talking about you ST Bende!) I’d have someone to share pictures of Scarlet Johansson.

5. I also hear that you're the father of two teenaged, twin daughters. How's that going? Do you find it difficult to balance parenting with writing?

How is it going? There are days I want to rip off my own arm just so I have something to beat myself of the head with. But I wouldn’t change my life for anything. They’re my biggest fans. And sure, it can be difficult sometimes to find time to write and be with them, but hands down if they need my attention, they get it.

Both my girls are really smart (Smarter than me) and wonderful young ladies. I can honestly say that without a doubt, they are my greatest accomplishment.

6. Okay, now, let's get serious for a moment. Talk to us about your bacon addiction. While you're at it, feel free to tell us the strangest thing you've ever eaten in relation to bacon. (e.g. bacon wrapped deep fried Twinkie.)

Actually, I’m more of a bacon purist. I have had bacon wrapped sea scallops. And I’ll use bacon when I’m sautéing green beans with garlic, but bacon doesn’t need to be added to anything. Bacon is its own food group. I actually just had some as I wrote this.

7. Anything else you'd like to add?

Vision of Shadows is a 40 plus dream finally come true. I’ve wanted to be an author for as long as I can remember. It took me a long time to figure out how to craft a story. I let the dream get away from me for a while, but I dug in and now the roller coaster ride is about to begin!

8. Great! So, now tell us about this book.

Is Bristol Blackburn about to meet the love of her life...or her killer? 

After the death of her parents, Bristol Blackburn's life is thrown into chaos and she's forced to move to Spirit, a small town where shadows are stirring. As she learns to navigate her new school and figures out how to keep her psychic abilities secret from her family, Bristol comes face to face with the boy who makes a regular appearance in her dreams: the gorgeous, possibly deadly, Payne McKnight. Soon she’ll find out if Payne will be the love of her life, or the end of it — and she has no idea which possibility scares her more.

And that's not even the worst of it. Strange shadows are haunting her dreams, and they're up to something that could put Bristol and the lives of everyone she loves in jeopardy.

{BLOG TOUR}: Entrusted

I'm extremely happy to welcome Connie Ann Michael to the blog today. She's out touring with her new young adult book, ENTRUSTED. (I've edited this book -- fantastic!!)  One her characters, Solomon is here to answer a few questions about him, his family, and the girl he loves, Emma. So, without further ado...

Could you tell me a little about how you first met Emma?
Well, I first met her when she was created as the vessel, but she was a baby and I didn't know it was her, so I guess that doesn't really count.  I was pulled into her dreams for a while before I actually got to meet her face to face, and that was at the Tribal Center.  It was the first time we got a chance to actually speak.  I'm afraid I wasn't as smooth as I would have hoped and was kind of at a loss for anything to say and kind of stared at her.  She takes my breath away.

What did you think of her initially? Love at first sight?
The minute I was pulled into her dreams and stood by watching her interaction with Raven, I knew she had my heart.  It was most definitely love at first sight and even today...every time I see her, I fall in love with her again.

If you had to describe Emma in three words?
Well her name means all-containing, I think that is a good word for her and what her purpose is...or was. I would also say compassionate, she cares so much for other people that she often times forgets about her needs.  And finally I would say beautiful.  Inside and out.

What's the hardest thing you've had to face together?
Well, the entire story of Entrusted is the fight we had to go through to get her away from Raven.  That would be the easy answer.  But I am going to say, from my point of view, the hardest thing I had to face was trying to convince Emma it I was worth fighting for.  That she could love me and except my love in return.  She can be stubborn and it took a lot to get her to see she was worthy of my love and of the life we could have together.  There was a lot of history she needed to be caught up on.  History she is a part of but not aware of.  It will take time for her to understand her part in it. But, more importantly, I need to be patient and love her while she questions who she is and what we can be together.

Okay, so your brother, Logan. He's a big part of the story and a friend to Emma. Give us a little dish on him. Will he ever find his heart?
Technically, he would be considered our cousin in your world.  We do not share mothers.  But we consider him a brother so that is fine to refer to him as that.  Remember, in our customs I can't tell too much about another's gifts so I will talk more general about him. Logan is my best friend as well as brother.  He has always got me and doesn't put up with my shit, as he says, not my words.  Logan is a free spirit.  That can be seen by his description.  He doesn't follow the traditional ways with his hair or jewelry but that's just him.  He embraces the modern world more than the rest of us, which makes it easier for him to work with the youth of the tribes.  He says I'm stuffy and scare the kids.  I prefer reserved.  Ha ha. Logan has a quick wit and loves to laugh, but he had a rough childhood and uses his humor to hide what is really going on underneath.  He won't talk about it, but I know.  Just like he knows things about me the others don't.  We have a weird connection that way.  I think Logan is a necessary force to offset Josiah's negative energy.  If anyone should find his heart, it should be Logan.  He has so much to give and I think if he found someone they might help him heal from his past.  And to answer your last part of the question.  I think Logan will definitely have his chance to tell his story later.

What's next for you and Emma?
I wish I could say we ride off into the sunset and live happily ever after but that isn't the way life works.  We got a reprieve at the end of Entrusted and hopefully we can take some time to get to know each other without worrying about Raven, but he's coming back.  We haven't won yet and until he is destroyed he will continue to fight for what he believes is his.  But the Great Spirit is giving us a small gift of time before I must leave.  Our time here is up and we are going to be moving on.  Emma needs to finish her senior year so we will be separated for a short time. I am hoping I can trust the friendships she has formed to help her during our separation.  Nick has some history he is unaware of that I believe will come in handy while I am gone.  You'll have to wait for him to reveal that, however.  Life is never guaranteed, but no matter what happens Emma and I are connected. I have no choice in that matter.  She has my heart.  I love her.  I'll do whatever I need to to make her happy.

Slowly and deliberately, Solomon began to kiss my shoulders, turning me so he could run his fingers lightly over the bruises on my back. I could feel the warmth of his touch become more intense as he transferred the wounds of my body to his own. His kiss, his touch, sent shivers through me, taking all my worries and fears away. He turned me again and placed his mouth over mine for a long, soul-stirring kiss.

“I think you should watch those healing skills of yours.” I was breathless.

He smiled mischievously. “It’s my touch that heals. I thought I would try something different this time.” He continued to trail kisses across my shoulders.

“Well, I give this technique high marks, but have to wonder how the older men would like it,” I stuttered, trying to keep my thoughts coherent.

 I felt him smile against my bare skin. “I’ll reserve it for you.”

“Does it hurt you?”

“Not as much as it does you.” His hands moved softly over my bare arms. I watched the bruises appear on him, and then slowly fade away.

“But I can heal you here.” I ran my fingers over the raw sore on his chest.

“Yes,” the word caught in his throat. “You already have.”
